Change Is Good!

No, this is not my remodeled kitchen, but an example of a beautiful one.

No, this is not my remodeled kitchen, but an example of a beautiful one.

Remodeling…what exactly does that mean?  According to the internet version of the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it means to “remake”.  Synonyms are as follows:  alter, make over, modify, recast, redo, refashion, remake, change, revamp, revise, rework, vary and related words are deform, metamorphose, mutate; regenerate, revolutionize, transfigure, transform, transmute; commute, convert, exchange; rejigger, retool.

I looked this up because my home is currently undergoing a remodel and as the general contractor puts a masonry bit into his drill and endeavors to put up the shower door, it seems like the entire house itself is about to FALL DOWN!  Dust, grout, mortar, and tile are frequently all over the place and only one shower, one toilet and the kitchen sink are usable.  But I content myself in the knowledge that at some point it will all get cleaned up and the house will be so much more attractive than it is now.  Everything that is out of place will soon be put back into place where it’s supposed to be, and all will be well with the world again.  The bathrooms and kitchen will have an updated look, the floors will be porcelain tile instead of 30 or 40 some year old linoleum with tears and holes in it, my shower will be bigger, the other bathroom will have a permanent shower also, and there will be new light fixtures, new toilets and sinks, and so much more.  So, how exactly does my home remodel relate to anything?

I’m so glad you asked.  If you have lived any time at all and encountered change in your life, it may seem as it does to me, as if you are undergoing a sort of remodel.   Depending on the scenario, you may feel much like you are being altered, made over, modified, changed, transformed, converted, and retooled.  Thankfully in most cases, it’s a slow process and happens almost without our being aware it’s happening, until one day you realize you are not the same as you once were.  In other situations, the “remodeling” takes place much more quickly, sometimes with a little pain involved, and those are the times when we usually have a tendency to yell out to the Lord…”What the sam hill do You think you are doing to me!!!???!!!”  (Sam Hill is one of my ex-husband’s favorite expressions..not sure where it came from, but it fits in more conversations than you could possibly imagine, without being profane or gross!)

Now, perhaps you have requested a “remodel”, a change, a make over.  Perhaps not.  But in the end, those that the Lord loves and calls His own will get one or more, whether they asked for or wanted it or not.  It’s definitely not a bad thing to have happen to you.  It’s really a very, very good thing in fact.  But it can be a bit disconcerting if you were planning to stay the same, unchanged, throughout your whole life.  Truth be told, life is all about change and becoming a better you anyway!  Or at least in God’s economy it is.  And, I think I’d rather endure a heavenly remodel than a truck load of other things I could imagine.

So, if you find yourself being retooled, rejiggered, reworked, revised and refashioned, take heart!  If you have received Christ as Savior and Lord, expect some changes, some remodeling to begin…and continue for the rest of your life.

“Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away.  Behold, the fresh and new has come!”  2 Corinthians 5:17  The Amplified Version

“Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].  Romans 12:2  The Amplified Version

The Creator of the Universe is on the job.  He’s the General Contractor and His remodels are stunningly beautiful and practical.  If you’re up for a remodel, give Him permission to do in your life whatever He wants because the end result will astound you!  Oh, you may still look like you in the end, but your insides, down deep in your heart, will be changed for all eternity.

I’m looking forward with great anticipation to the end result of my bathroom and kitchen remodel.  But honestly, I can hardly wait to see what God does with me too because that remodel lasts on into Heaven.

It’s been awhile since I’ve had the opportunity to sit down and write, but  the time spent away from the computer has not been totally unproductive.  I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about daydreaming.  Have you ever taken the time to think about stuff other than what you normally think about?  The day-to-day hum drum stuff….  What will I have at Starbuck’s today?  Will the plumber cost me a month’s wages by the time he’s finished fixing my leaking faucet?  Will the car hold out till it’s paid off?  You know, boring stuff!

Have you ever wondered or daydreamed about what it would be like to live or work in places other than where you are now, or be different than who you are at this present time?Hobbiton

For example, what would it be like to live or visit Hobbiton in the Shire and run around with Bilbo Baggins, Frodo, Sam, Pippin or Meriadoc, or hob nob with the elves in Rivendell or the dwarves as they fight the dragon for their mountain?  While reading the Hobbit or Lord of the Rings, I used to think about and imagine time spent in those adorable little Hobbit holes and gardens or spending an evening under the “Birthday Tree” in the middle  of the field.  The beauty and peacefulness of Rivendell with waterfalls, food and good fun just seemed like such a wonderful place to be.  The dwarves’ Lonely Mountain was less inviting, but the dwarves themselves seemed quite interesting and I think I would have enjoyed meeting and hanging out with them for awhile.

And what would it be like to spend time in Forks,  Washington and be invited to the Cullen home for brunch?  (Well, maybe not!)  But I have to admit, I would have had a million questions for them about their life and places they had been. Or maybe it would be better to go to Jacob’s house and hang out with the “wolves” for awhile.  The forest, river, meadows are so gorgeous there, it would be hard to not want to hike for hours.  And then, after you were really tired and hungry, you could come back to town and have dinner at the town’s favorite cafe and be served by Cora, the waitress.  Maybe we’d even get to meet Charlie, the Chief of Police there as well!

Or, how about traveling forward in time to fly through space on the Enterprise and meet Captain James T. Kirk, Spock and Scotty? Kirk, Spock, and Scotty from Star Trek What stories they would tell of all the adventures they’ve had together exploring other planets and their inhabitants.  What must it be like to step foot on a place that is millions of miles away from the planet on which you were born and grew up?  How would it be to work around so many other curious creatures other than the humans you’ve  been used to all your life?  Now there’s something to daydream about!  ‘Course some of your co-workers may seem like aliens as it is, but that’s for another blog post!

Oh, I suppose time would be better spent thinking on things more down to earth and more pertinent to living the life we live here.  But, sometimes I wonder if we wouldn’t accomplish more, see our hopes and dreams be fulfilled, if we could just spend some quality time envisioning the things we desire a little more often, as well as pray for God’s perfect will to be done in our lives.  See ourselves being successful in life and business…visualizing our deepest dreams coming to pass.  Don’t you suppose God did this when creating the world, in the first place?  He saw it first, then spoke it into existence!

To bring this all back to reality a bit, in my case I have been bemoaning the fact that my master bathroom is a disaster and I really needed and wanted new floors, new shower, new kitchen counters and oven, backsplash, etc.  I have so many projects in mind that it boggles my mind!  I would try to imagine how it could look, but sorta gave up because I just didn’t see a way for it to ever happen financially, nor could I get a clear view of what it would look like.  I became discouraged and a little depressed while trying to believe for the best.planes, trains, & automobiles

But, as is everything with serving the Lord, there came a time when a way was opened, the money became available, the right people came to the forefront to put my dreams into action, and as we speak, I am in the middle of a remodel!  Oh, there is still much yet to do, but this is the first, the beginning, of many such blessings I believe are yet to come.

Sometimes daydreaming is worth doing.  It’s the creative part that God has instilled in us to give us something to look forward to, make inventions, enjoy life more fully, and often those daydreams will pop out into reality to benefit more than just ourselves.  God often will give us ideas while we’re imagining or daydreaming, and in our more rational moments we can take those ideas and make them really happen.  Where do you suppose the internet, telephones, plains, trains, and automobiles came from?  Somebody had to imagine and daydream about them first.  They got an idea, and at the appropriate time, they began to work on that idea till it became a reality.

But another thing I find worth dreaming about is Heaven.  Have you ever wondered what Heaven is like?  Who will be there? What will we be like and how will we communicate?  Will we be like angels, are there harps hanging from every cloud?

Years ago I found myself sitting outside my apartment with my kids and their young friends, talking about and reading about Heaven with them.  I’d not read the book of Revelation much, but that day I read the 21st and 22nd chapters to them.  I don’t know if they enjoyed it at much as I did, but all of a sudden, Heaven became more real and inviting than anything else I daydreamed about before or since.

Can't wait to meet Jesus, and all my friends & family who've gone before me!

Can’t wait to meet Jesus, and all my friends & family who’ve gone before me!

If you have never read those chapters, or even if you have, I’d encourage you to do so because Heaven is REAL.  We have the opportunity to get to know the Creator of the Universe through Jesus His Son, and when our earthly vessels give out we will go there — based on our choice to receive Jesus into our hearts and lives here on Earth.   Isn’t that exciting?  While we’re human we have all cried many tears of sorrow and disappointment, but there will be no more tears in Heaven.  No pain, no sorrow, no torment, no grieving, no death.  That sounds pretty good to me!

And, God is pretty extravagant too.  The wall around His heavenly City are of jasper, the City itself is pure gold.  Costly gems of sapphires, emeralds, amethyst, topaz and many others are the foundational stones.  Even the main street through that city is of pure gold, translucent as glass;  and the twelve gates are pearls–12 giant pearls!  (Wonder if He got them from a dozen humungous oysters?)  He has millions of angels to act as your “tour guides” to show you around and help you become accustomed to your new surroundings.

Oh, there is so much more to tell, but you might want to check it out for yourself instead.   Maybe you’d even like to start daydreaming about Heaven like I do every so often.  It sure won’t hurt and it might give you encouragement to hang in there for a little while longer knowing that there is a very real place to spend eternity when your time comes someday.   God is very real too and He loves you with a love that has been expressed through the sacrifice of His Beloved Son, Jesus.  He’s prepared a place for you.

Come, won’t you dream a little dream with me?
