Abortion or LIFE!!!

Some years ago, right around my birthday, I posted a photo obtained from Facebook that showed a replica of a very tiny baby, held in someone’s hand.  It turned out to be a beautiful sculpture, one of several, with features that were spot on to a new born.  My point in the blog was to celebrate how God had saved me from abortion, that we are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image and likeness of God, not something to be tossed aside on a garbage heap of medical waste to be burned or, worse, sold for parts to the highest bidder. We are fearfully and wonderfully made

There was one lady who angrily spoke up and wrote that I should have posted a real live 12 week old baby instead of a replica.  Not wanting to turn my blog into something quite controversial, I didn’t do or say anything negative to her but left a comment about the photo and what it was meant to portray.   Because of that photo, my blog continues to get a few hits every so often, but I don’t believe anyone is really looking at the site itself…just the photo.   So, I have taken that photo down, to replace with something more appropriate but not overtly graphic.  (If you wish to see the real life photos of aborted children, they are out there on Google and they are heart-breaking.)

My blog visitor was right though.  We in the Christian community have long allowed the world to dictate much of how we respond to things like this, subjects that are uncomfortable, not politically correct, and we hide from them as I have, not wanting to offend.  Abortion, though, is one subject I do feel strongly about because I was saved from the butcher’s hand by a birth mother who cared enough about her own life and mine to give me a chance.

Please consider this:  in order to have confidence in God for every area of our lives, we must be confident that the life He has given us is worth living, and fighting for — from the “womb to the tomb”.  Life is from God, not to be extinguished by anyone other than Him, before it has an opportunity to take a breath.  He offers believers, His kids, abundant life!  Why would we not want that for our children, born or in utero?  Obviously, I’m probably preaching to the choir here.

The self-centeredness, selfishness, greed, and hypocrisy that surrounds us these days, particularly regarding this subject is beyond reprehensible and demeaning to our humanity.  But, instead of wallowing in depression and despair over what is or what seems to be unchanging and only getting worse, I still remain confident in a loving God who will bring His Will, His Light, Love and Mercy to our sinful world and bring revival to those lost in their own depravity and blinded by evil.

For those who do not yet know Jesus as Lord and Savior, I urge you to humble yourselves before Him and repent, turn around, go the other way.  You will never regret it.  He is waiting for you with open arms to come to Him.  (If you should need assistance or have questions, please check out my page “Confidence in God 101” – formerly known as “Where Does Confidence in God Come From?” – for more info.)

For those of you who do know Jesus as Lord and Savior, Lamb of God and Soon-Coming King, do not despair!  Do not give up!   Have confidence in God!  Continue to do good in this world and fight for what is right!

31 But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] shall change and renew their strength and power; they shall lift their wings and mount up [close to God] as eagles [mount up to the sun]; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint or become tired. [Heb. 12:1-3.]  Isaiah 40:31 Amplified BibleCourage

Remember, we aren’t wrestling with evil human souls here who, in reality,  are virtually bound in chains by demonic influences. This is a FULL ON spiritual battle against the powers of darkness planning on destroying the human race God so lovingly created and sacrificed His Son for.  So if you wish to remain faint of heart, you’ve already lost.  Gear up, Soldiers!  Be Courageous! Put on your armor!

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God,so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvationand the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.  Ephesians 6:10-18 New International Version

Pray like you’ve never prayed before.  Believe like you’ve never believed before.  Obey like you’ve never obeyed before.  And most importantly, speak and act like what you’re praying and believing for is reality.  Then you’ll see things you’ve never seen before.  Get ready Troops.  A Miracle awaits us if we don’t give up our confidence!

Although I don’t know a lot about movies, I like to think I’m a bit of a movie buff.  My roomie/renter, on the other hand, is a veritable walking encyclopedia of movie trivia, background history, actors, directors, props and special effects…always with the props and special effects!

When I decide to watch a movie though, I tend to be pretty picky about what I watch because certain genres just don’t appeal to me at all.  Horror, for example, is the worst as far as I’m concerned.  I don’t like being afraid and subjecting myself to fear on purpose is just a dumb thing to do.  Just my opinion, folks!  I know there are a lot of you out there that love horror flicks tho’ so, to each his own I guess.

Over the many years I’ve been entertained and uplifted by movies, there have been only a very few that have been consistently meaningful to me.  Only 4 or 5 have pulled me into their magical story long enough to warrant more than one or two viewings.  By that, I mean I can watch them over and over and over again and still have the same sense of adventure, peace, love, courage, perseverance, and so forth every time I enter into the story I’m being told on the screen.

A Christmas Carol with Jim Carrey, circa 2011?

A Christmas Carol with Jim Carrey, circa 2011?

A Christmas Carol, in every possible variation, is probably my favorite.  Somehow the sinfulness of man coupled with the right set of circumstances to cause repentance, healing of the soul, and then, restoration of relationships is a story for the ages.  Without specifically talking about God and the Salvation He brings through Christ, it still brings the Truth home to me. I love this Old English tale of the heart of a man changing from bitterness and unforgiveness to one of being forgiven and given a second chance.

Secondly, the story of Sleeping Beauty has always brought me closer to Jesus through the knowledge of His love for me as part of His Bride.  The Prince’s Sword of Truth and Shield of Virtue remind me of the spiritual armor that we are to wear when fending off the arrows of the wicked one.  And, in the story, the enemy was destroyed when the Sword ofTruth was plunged thru the wicked Maleficent’s heart, and the Princess (and all the kingdom) is awakened with the Prince’s first kiss.  In the same way, our enemy is destroyed by exposing him to the Truth, Jesus.

Then there’s Pretty Woman.  Watched that one seven times in a row one day!  A woman lost in sin sees a way out, raises her sights, and chooses to better herself while finding a true love.  No more losers for her.  A man, bitter and driven, learns how to live and enjoy a positive and loving relationship.  Love it!

And, who can forget The Lord of the Rings!  If ever there was a movie collection depicting good versus evil, camaraderie, loyalty, friendship, perseverance in the face of great fear and danger, this is it!  What a wonderful example of God’s intervention into the affairs of men.  Watched these movies a bunch too!

Edward, Bella and JacobAnother set of movies have become popular in recent years so I decided to have my own private Twilight Saga fest and watch all of them just before going to see the last installment in the theater.  Once again, God showed me some positive aspects to these films that many people overlook, and quite frankly, I was not expecting.  It was after reading an article by a well-meaning pastor who chose to strongly warn Christians in particular, and parents in general, to be extremely cautious about these films that I felt compelled to share with you some of the insights I received while watching them for myself.  I acknowledge that I may lose some of my friends who disagree with my point of view, but I believe there is a balance to be gained here by taking a more objective look at what actually goes on in this story.

That said, without doubt, there are far too many vampire movies, books, videos, and TV shows out nowadays that depict the most heinous darkness, sensuality, evil, profane sexuality, violence, and lecherous debauchery that could possibly be put onto a movie screen.  And these movies/books have been written and filmed in such a way to have a sick appeal to many of our precious young people, so much so that they are now mirroring the behavior they see on screen or read in books in alarming numbers:  vampirism, paganism, witchcraft, etc.  This sick, twisted and perverted behavior has been glamorized and adopted by far too many who choose a Goth or other such life style.  If we condemn any movies, it should be the ones with very dark intent, should it not?  But,Twilight?  Here’s why I think this story might belong in a different category and should be considered more healthy and positive than at first glance.

The Cullen family from Twilight

The Cullen family from Twilight

First, we all know that vampires, werewolves, demons, devils, and the supernatural in general has been a hot topic for centuries, but never more so than in recent decades.  So, I’m guessing that Stephanie Meyer may have chosen to write this story utilizing something she already knew would be of interest to most teens, and that perhaps she could interject a bit of wholesomeness into the mix instead of the rabid degradation they see in other movies/stories of the same genre.

  • As I watched the story unfold, I noticed that one of the main characters, Edward, constantly tries to dissuade Bella from becoming a vampire throughout the series because he knew how difficult that “life” was and loved her enough to not want her to have to go through it.  Her whole life would be frozen in time, never moving forward, never able to really live, and having to give up her family and friends.  It is a violent life, and the compulsion to take a human life is difficult to overcome, especially if you must be around humans for any length of time. He felt he was a monster and did not want her to think it was any kind of life to be desired.  In other words, the life of a vampire was not glamorized but one to be shunned at all costs. Choices we make in this life follow us forever!  For good or ill.
  • Human life was considered valuable and should be lived as such, even though it was not immortal.  Even Carlisle Cullen, the family’s patriarch, shunned the power and prestige of the “vampire elite” because he wanted to serve human kind and make their lives better.  He took a protective role over the community in which he lived and worked. The only time the family was pressed into any violence was to remove those vampires who trespassed and refused to honor the Cullen’s territory and life style and threatened the humans in the area.
  • Parents were respected and were spoken to with respect and honor.
A first date -- up a tree!

A first date — up a tree!

Marriage was portrayed as sacred and very important before having intimate relations.  Even though Edward considered sex with a human to be very dangerous anyway, he would not even consider trying because marriage before sex was essential first.  How often do you see that in a vampire or any other type movie, for that matter?

  • There was no pro-choice when it came to their child either.  Bella refused an abortion, and was even willing to risk her life, because she felt the life within her was too precious and important to her world to sacrifice.  As it turned out, she was right!  Society today is quick to get rid of an unwanted, inconvenient or possibly defective, child.  Even the fact that this child could possibly be severely “defective” was not enough of a reason to her to want to abort it.  Yay Bella!!

There are probably a dozen other things little things within these movies that point to positive, healthy views on life, but time and space are limited.  Lest you misunderstand my position on this subject,  I am not advocating that everyone run right out and buy the books and movies because I’ve perceived that they are the most honorable and healthy literature out there.  However, I do think their popularity warrants a second look, if only to acknowledge that they are putting forth some healthy, Godly view points that most others of the same type of subject matter are definitely not.  Children are dying for love, they are craving the supernatural, and rather than point out all the negatives, let’s at least look a little further and see if there aren’t some valuable and positive aspects to point out, lift up and encourage.  Kids are going to these movies in droves so let’s point out the good parts for them to look for rather than all the bad.  They might actually remember them and perhaps turn to the Lord one day.

On this Thanksgiving Day and beyond, I am grateful for the many, many blessings I’ve received from the Lord, but one thing I am thankful for more than anything.  If you are seeking for Truth, and looking to see whether God and His Son Jesus are for real, you can and will find Him, no matter where you are or what your life experiences have been in the past – even if you are watching a movie about vampires and werewolves!

Happy Birthday!!

At the risk of appearing to talk about myself a little too much, may I just make mention of the fact that tomorrow is my 62nd birthday!  Now, that isn’t necessarily a big deal, given that everyone has a birthday every year and, unless the Lord takes them Home, everyone will have a 62nd birthday eventually.

However, what makes birthdays, every birthday, a bit more special for me is knowing that for some reason, still unknown to me, I was rescued by the Lord.  Instead of being aborted, I was given the opportunity to live.  You see, I was adopted!

Fortunately, I was born during a time when Roe v. Wade was unheard of as well as was the idea of having a “choice” to murder an unborn child.  (Sorry if I offended you, but it is what it is.)  I was given up for adoption by a mother that I grew up believing loved me so very much that she was willing to allow someone else to raise and care for me because she felt ill-equipped to handle the job herself.  Looking back on it, my adoptive mom could have told me that story as a young child because, knowing her heart, she couldn’t have conceived of any other scenario, not being able to have children herself.  Or, perhaps they were similarly advised at the children’s home where she and Dad picked me up on that cool, late summer day in September, 1950.  Either way, I have always held a fondness for my birth mother because I’m sure it was the hardest decision she ever made in her life.  I honor her for the courage she had to choose life instead of other options she might have taken instead.

The way I remember the story of our first meeting, Mom and Dad were advised by snail mail I was available and they realized they only had 24 hours or so to come get me before the deadline date, after waiting at least two years to receive the good news.  They had absolutely nothing to start out with so they ran around like crazy people preparing my room, buying baby bottles and formula, diapers (the cloth kind since disposables had not yet been invented—yuck!), girl clothes, crib, and all the baby necessities.  Somewhere during this frantic buying spree, Dad arrived back at his parked car to find an officer writing up a parking ticket!  When apprised of the situation, the officer smiled and tore up the ticket, telling Dad, “Aww, go pick up your daughter and good luck to you!”   Soon, they were on their way, driving a few hundred miles from where they lived in Montana to Helena, the state capitol, to meet their new family addition!

The Three of Us

The Three of Us

After all the introductions, paper work, instructions, and so forth were completed, they jumped into the  car again (with me of course) for a few hour trip to visit the home of very dear friends to show off their new baby girl where they were to learn, quickly I might add, that they had a soggy “wet” baby in the back seat!  Neither of them had a clue how to change diapers, nor had they even given thought to the necessity of doing so as I had not made a peep to complain!  (I was such good baby!!)  Fortunately for me, their friends had several children and they were able to give them some good, solid, practical advice as to what to do next.

That was my introduction to my new family!  There are probably many more parts to that story that have long since been forgotten, but all in all I had a very blessed life with my adoptive parents.  God certainly knew what He was doing!  The only thing I remember wishing was that I could have had an older brother, but I am content that things worked out as they should have.

Years and years later though, simply walking home from work one day, God tugged at my heart.  An overwhelming realization came suddenly to my heart that I don’t ever remember consciously thinking about before that time.  Tears began to stream down my face as I began to understand the scope of the fact that I have been twice blessed!  Struggling over many years to fully understand and “feel” God’s love for me, these revelations came flooding in.  I not only was allowed to be born physically, but 18 years and 3 months to the day later was “born again” spiritually when I asked Jesus to be my Lord and Savior.  Then came another revelation!  I was adopted once physically, but God also adopted me into His family when I got saved.  Twice born, twice adopted.  Chosen by my parents, chosen by God.  Wow!!!!!

Please understand that all these references to me are not meant to be self promoting in any way.  I am incredibly humbled by all that has happened to me, but I share it all as my story, a testimony to the greatness of God in my life and to let you know that He is not a respecter of persons.  He loves and cares for you in the same way.  We may not share the exact same set of circumstances, but He is no less a loving Father to any one of you.  In the grand scheme of things, I am one of many, but we are all His children if we believe in, rely on and trust in Him and receive Jesus into our hearts as Lord of our lives.

My hope and prayer is that you can see yet another reason why we can have confidence in God as you have read my little story.  And, may I add, if you someday find yourself, or know of someone, in the same position as my birth mother, please, please consider adoption as a better course of action to take.  You never know whose life you may be sparing or the adoptive parents you may be blessing!  I can assure you that God’s heart will be blessed by your courage and sacrifice.
