Little guy, isn't he?

Little guy, isn’t he?

Maybe it’s because we’re headed into Winter, or maybe because I’m getting older, or maybe I’m just being lazy and losing my interest in this world, I just feel like hibernating.  My favorite thing to do lately is to be snug as a bug in my little house, watching TV or a movie, spending time on my computer, or sitting and crocheting to my heart’s content while the rest of the world spins around me.  I don’t want to see anyone or go anywhere, I just want to be in my little house–alone–well sorta.  Do you ever feel like that?

I’ve discovered that there are plenty of other critters that hibernate besides the bears that we instantly think of when we hear the word hibernate.   Chipmunks and gila monsters are among the many, if you can believe that!  Or how about the spring peeper frog?  Who knew?  What is a spring peeper frog anyway?  Oh, well.  The only difference of course if that they do it by instinct rather than choice.  It’s a built in mechanism!

When I think of hibernating, I usually imagine someone hiding away from the cares of the world and all of its pain and confusion, heartache and struggle.  Sticking one’s head in the sand comes to mind.  Who wants to be out there in the harsh cruel world when you can hide away from everybody and everything if you have the opportunity?  Nobody wants to hurt or be hurt, at least not on purpose, and for many it seems that’s all there is out there anymore.  Day after day, week after week, month after month of struggling just to be.

We get bombarded daily with information, “input” as the movie Short Circuit so creatively puts it.  It’s a comedy about a robot who craved information, a constant flow, and all he did throughout the movie was gather every bit of “input” he could about his surroundings.  Well, in this techno world we live in, that’s what we get every day.  At work, at home, at play.  Is it any wonder we are in overload mode much of the time and just want–or need–to hide?

On the other hand, hibernating can have its useful points.  Besides getting to sleep a lot, the animals that do hibernate grow and mature during that time as a rule, and come out stronger and better able to cope with their surroundings and fellow animals.  Is it possible that a time of hibernation could be good for us under the right circumstances as well?

I’m not suggesting that we hide from our problems of course.  Those nasty things we still must face head on and deal with to locate the root causes for their continuing appearance in our lives, coming to grips with what our responsibilities and priorities are.

But, perhaps it’s a good thing to back off from the daily grind occasionally, take some time to reflect on our motives, our goals, and what’s really important to us and then rest–relax, take a load off!  We know that our crazy world and all of its’ issues will all still be there, but after we’ve had time to recoup from the war zone we just left, we’ll be better able to go back into the battle fully charged and ready to begin anew.  Sort of like retreating in order to advance.

Maybe that’s where I am….needing to rest in the Lord before beginning a new aspect of my life.  Perhaps you are there too?  The Lord gave me a great word from the Bible about this very thing.  Hope you will enjoy it too.

“Besides this you know what [a critical] hour this is, how it is high time now for you to wake up out of your sleep (rouse to reality).  For salvation (final deliverance) is nearer to us now than when we first believed (adhered to, trusted in, and relied on Christ, the Messiah).”  Romans 13:11  The Amplified Version

It’s important to take the time to rest and refresh, hibernate if you will, to strengthen and renew yourself in the Lord.  But when that time has been accomplished, it’s time to wake up!  Come back stronger to share the Lord, share your gifts and talents that God has given you, pray and give of yourself to others who are hurting just like you were.

It’s time to let your little light shine!  Wake up, Sleepyhead!!!!
